In the wake of the tragic incident that unfolded during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating the introduction of official guidelines to regulate post-IPL title parades.
The celebration, which turned into a nightmare on June 5 outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, led to the death of eleven fans and left many others injured in a stampede-like situation. The incident has triggered nationwide outrage and drawn scrutiny over the handling of the crowd and the event.
"At some stage, BCCI will have to do something. We cannot be silent spectators. It was a private affair of RCB, but we at the BCCI are responsible for cricket in India, and we will try to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told Cricbuzz.
The Central Crime Branch of the Bengaluru Police arrested four individuals associated with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the event management company DNA Entertainment Private Limited.
Among those arrested was RCB’s Marketing Head, Nikhil Sosale, who oversees the team’s social media communications. He was detained at around 6:30 AM at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, while en route to Mumbai. The police also took into custody Sunil Mathew, Vice President of DNA Entertainment, along with two other officials, Kiran and Sumanth.
While the BCCI is yet to finalise the exact framework for regulating future victory celebrations, the board is expected to consider a system of deterrents and preventive measures to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
