Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their fourth match at Chepauk in a total of five games that they have played at the venue in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, after their five-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 15 (Friday).
This is the joint highest number of games that CSK have ever lost at their home ground in the history of the IPL. Their legendary leader, MS Dhoni, pointed out the reason behind his side's humiliation in IPL 2025.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony of the CSK vs SRH match, Dhoni said, “In a tournament like this, if you have one or two areas where you can plug in the holes, it is good, but if the majority of your players are not doing well, it becomes very difficult.”
CSK have not clicked at all, winning only two matches out of their first nine. Because of that, they are at the bottom of the points table. SRH, who moved to eighth position with their third win of the season, still have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
SRH skipper Pat Cummins was glad that a few things clicked for his team as they collected their first-ever points at Chepauk in their IPL history.
“It was great. A few things came together tonight. A couple of guys at the top wanted to take the game on, but the boys shifted defensively and did really well. Our record against CSK isn't that great, so it's good to fix that one. We wish we finished that more comfortably, but overall, happy with that win,” he said.
Harshal Patel, who picked 4/28 and broke the back of CSK’s batting, was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match. He took Dhoni’s wicket for the fourth time in IPL history.
In the post-match presentation, Harshal said, "We've been trying to do that for the last few games, but some pieces have been missing. For all of it to come together when we need to win every match is pretty special.”
Explaining his lucky breakthrough of Dhoni, Harshal said, “I was trying to bowl length to him, not necessarily wide, but it was just one of those variations where what you try doesn't come off, but [I am] pretty happy [that] the ball went to the fielder.”
