England’s T20 Star Tom Banton Smashes 344* To Set New Somerset Record
Tom Banton surpassed Justin Langer’s 342 to set a new record and has a chance to score 400
England’s discarded T20 star Tom Banton set a Somerset record as the right-hander ended day two of their clash against Worcestershire on April 5 (Saturday) on an unbeaten 344. The right-hander surpassed former Australian opener Justin Langer’s record, who scored 342 against Surrey all the way back in 2006.
Banton smashed 344 off 381 balls on the first two days of play for Somerset, striking 53 fours and a six in his marathon eight-hour knock. The right-hander broke the club record in the penultimate ball of the day’s play when he hit Kashif Ali for a four.
It was the right-hander’s partnership with James Rew - 371 - which set the record for the highest partnership in the history of the club, surpassing John Francis and Ian Blackwell’s 320 against Durham UCCE back in 2005.
Highest score for Somerset in County Championship
Tom Banton - 344* vs Worcestershire, 2025
Justin Langer - 342 vs Surrey, 2006
Viv Richards - 322 vs Warwickshire, 1985
Justin Langer - 315 vs Middlesex, 2007
Banton started day two of the clash on 84 and went on to further smash 260 runs on day two, which helped the right-hander to go past the legendary record. If he continues the same momentum, there's a good chance that the right-hander could surpass the 400-run mark, becoming the first-ever Somerset batter to get to that landmark.
