Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir lambasted the idea of holding road shows and victory parades for champion teams. Gambhir went on to say that the life of people is far more important than those road shows and parades, after he was asked a question about Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s IPL Victory Parade stampede that led to 11 deaths in the city across various incidents on June 4.
“I was never a believer that we needed to have road shows. I was of the same opinion while playing even after winning 2007. The lives of people are far more important,” Gambhir said on June 5 (Thursday) in Mumbai, during a press conference organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the team’s departure for India's tour of England.
Gambhir, who was part of the India World Cup-winning teams in 2007, 2011 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)’s IPL winning teams of 2012 and 2014 as a player and 2024 as mentor, also had words of advice for organisers.
“In the future, we need to be more aware. Have it closed or inside a stadium,” he said.
“It is very tragic what happened. We are all responsible. I hope nothing like this happens in the future,” added the 43-year-old.
