Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya and Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer were both fined for slow over-rate after their teams failed to finish their overs in the given time during Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025.
The contest, which was eventually won by PBKS, got off to a late start due to rain delay in Ahmedabad. The unseasonal showers began right after the toss, and the altered playing conditions came into play, as two hours of extra time were given to complete the game. However, the slow over-rates ensured that the game finished even later.
Since it was the second slow over-rate offence by PBKS, Iyer was fined INR 24 Lakh, meanwhile Hardik will have to cough up INR 30 Lakh because it was his third such mistake. Meanwhile, the rest of the PBKS team were fined INR 6 Lakh or 25% of their match fee (whichever is lower), and the MI team were fined INR 12 Lakh or 50% of their match fee (whichever is lower).
Had it been last season, MI skipper Pandya would have had to sit out the next game of his team as it was his third such offence. Notably, he had to sit out the first game of this season. However, from this season onwards, the rules have been changed, and match suspensions no longer occur.
Meanwhile, the IPL is set to have a new champion with PBKS and RCB facing each other in the final on June 3. Skipper Iyer was the star for his team as he scored 87* off just 41 deliveries.
