Chris Woakes Named In England Lions' Squad Against India A
England skipper Ben Stokes might also feature in the series depending on his fitness during the Zimbabwe four-day game
England have named experienced pacer Chris Woakes in the England Lions squad that will face India A in two four-day games. There’s also a chance that Test skipper Ben Stokes might feature in the games, but that will depend on how he pulls up in the four-day Test against Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Woakes, who has been in really good form in Tests in England and is coming after picking 24 wickets at an average of 20.25 last year. He has picked up the reins of England’s bowling attack after James Anderson’s retirement quite well, and will now get a chance to prove his fitness against India A.
The other notable inclusions in the England Lions squad are Ahmed brothers - Rehan and Farhan. While Rehan has already played international cricket for England, Farhan’s off-spin will be tested against the spin playing calibre of India A batters.
Batters Jordan Cox and Ben McKinney have also been included, and both will be looking to have a good outing to challenge Zak Crawley’s spot at the top of the order. The side will be captained by James Rew, the spare batter in the Test squad against Zimbabwe. Left-arm pacer Josh Hull, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last year, is also part of the squad.
“This series against a strong India A side is a huge opportunity for an exciting and highly talented group of players,” England and Wales Cricket Board Performance Director Ed Barney said.
“It will provide an opportunity both individually and collectively to excel on the international stage as we continue to succession plan for England's future needs.”
